The circle of fifths is a great way to cycle through keys, and if you read it right to left, it also shows the progression of fourths—a fun tool to use in certain parts of a song.
Lastly, here’s a tool for more advanced songwriters who want to add chords outside the key to bring color to a progression. My favorite is using the the V/vi—for example, C–E7 (V/vi)–Am. Combined with the circle of fifths, this technique allows songwriters to effortlessly add color and creativity while keeping a sense of logic behind the musical ‘madness and magic.
